Orthodontic emergencies

Urgencias en ortodoncia

Orthodontic emergencies are a rare occurrence. However, patients may sometimes be affected by different problems: discomfort, pain, difficult adaptation… They may also suffer a knock or somehow bang the apparatus or their teeth.

Potential complications

A band or bracket has come loose

Make an appointment with the dentist as soon as possible so that we can reattach the loose part.

In the event of pain caused by a band or bracket hurting your gum, tongue or cheek, use the orthodontics wax supplied. However, if the pain persists, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Loss of a ligature

Lost ligatures must be replaced at the surgery as soon as possible. Don’t wait, ask for an appointment immediately.

Jagged or irritating wire

Call us to check if the wire position requires adjustment.

Discomfort immediately the appliance is fitted

Some kinds of discomfort may occur: irritation of the tongue, cheeks and lips. In this case, use the mouthwash or orthodontics wax prescribed; both can also be purchased directly from your chemist. Your mucous membranes will gradually get used to the discomfort.

Pain caused by the appliance pulling on your teeth. This pain is normal and usually lasts for a few days after tension has been applied to your brace. It particularly occurs in adults.

It is less frequent in children and adolescents. If needed, don’t hesitate to take the prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine.

Blow to the teeth

You must immediately inform our clinic of all blows to your teeth, no matter how small (a fall, knock, car accident, etc.) in order that we can check that no damage has been caused to your brace.

Other problems

In the event of other problems, call us. We’ll tell you what to do or give you an appointment.

Bear in mind…

  • You must expect a period of adaptation. Your dentist will simply and effectively deal with any discomfort you may feel.
  • Interrupting treatment (a lost or damaged brace) is highly unadvisable for successful results. Ask for an appointment immediately should this occur.
  • Any blows or knocks suffered by your brace or teeth must be checked as soon as possible.
