Dental Veneers in San Sebastian

Would you like to have brighter teeth?

Porcelain veneers or laminates are a cosmetic dental treatment used to improve the shape and colour of your natural teeth.

The treatment consists of applying a porcelain laminate of between 0.2 and 3 mm to the external face of your front teeth for a more attractive smile. Today the materials used are highly resistant and will last for 10 to 15 years. This technique is purely aesthetic and neither protects nor strengthens your teeth.

At our dental clinic in San Sebastian we are specialists in applying dental veneers. Contact us if you have any doubts about this aesthetic dental treatment.

Veneers must not be confused with crowns. Crowns completely cover the surface of your tooth, while veneers only cover the front part of the tooth.

The main difference between porcelain dental veneers and crowns is that veneers are used when the tooth is almost intact. Crowns, on the other hand, cover or surround the whole tooth and are used when part of a tooth is missing or when it is smaller than average.

The main functions of dental veneers are to:

When is it advisable to use veneers? Indications

Teeth with composite fillings

With time, composite fillings lose their colour and start to darken.

Being porous, composite resin is prone to staining by food, drink, and cigarette smoke. Even if we polish these fillings when cleaning your teeth at our clinic, they never quite return to their initial colour. And whitening toothpaste won’t do the job either. In these cases we can either replace the composites or apply porcelain veneers or crowns, with much more natural results. And if your veneers do stain due to cigarette smoke for instance, we can recover their initial colour by cleaning them with rubber cups at our clinic.

Small, fractured or misshapen teeth

In other words, when your teeth have an odd or conical shape or when the colour or texture of the enamel suffers alterations.

In cases such as these, e.g. when you have slightly crowded teeth, we tend to use veneers rather than brackets. The same applies in the opposite case, when you have diastemas or gaps between your teeth.

Veneers are generally used in adult patients who would rather not have to wear brackets to correct a dental defect which, though small, they would like to have fixed.

Tooth discolouration or staining

This is when your teeth are discoloured to the point that we can’t completely fix the problem simply by whitening them. It is often found in patients whose teeth have been discoloured as a result of having taken tetracycline antibiotics as a young child under the age of 7.

How do we fit dental veneers in san sebastian?

The dental veneer process consists of gluing wafer-thin porcelain laminates to the external face of your teeth in order to conceal cosmetic issues such as their colour, shape or size. Thanks to their highly resistant material, these veneers can be expected to have a long lifespan in your mouth and may even last for your whole life if properly looked after.

Prepping

Prior to their application by dental veneer experts at our clinic in San Sebastian, we must make a preliminary study so that the veneers can be made to measure. Before applying the veneer, we prepare the tooth by gently filing its surface; this means that its final thickness will be much more natural once the veneer is in place. Normally we fit provisional laminates while the final veneers are being made in the laboratory. However, in the case of very gentle filing, this step can be skipped.

Fitting porcelain dental veneers

When the time comes to fit the dental veneers to your teeth, the procedure involves a special application protocol. The dental surgeon will apply each veneer following a plan drawn up based on the preliminary study. The adhesives used are extremely resistant and make this a highly durable treatment. The final results are immediately visible.

How to look after your porcelain veneers

The best way to guarantee the long life of your porcelain dental veneers is to take very good care of your dental hygiene. We recommend that you use a soft bristle toothbrush or an electric toothbrush with soft, rotary tufts. While you can use floss and interdental brushes, you must never use a toothpick. Gels are less abrasive than conventional toothpastes. You can also use mouthwash, although it is better to avoid those that contain alcohol (which softens the resins over time) and chlorhexidine (as they tend to stain, although said staining can be removed with cleaning).

You must also take care not to eat hard foods like nougat or bite into crab legs for instance. This includes eating hard sweets, ribs or chicken bones, as these can scratch or crack your veneers.

We also remind you of the importance of visiting your dentist at least once a year for a check up of your dental veneers and of your oral health in general. Smokers should visit their dentists more often as they are more prone to infection.
